What We Do
Blind Beggar Press is an independent publishing company which specializes in publishing books, posters, and
other printed matter highlighting established and emerging writers and artists. We also present workshops, readings, exhibits, and special programs for the public. In addition, we produce electronic media which expands our outreach to supporters in the form of videos, CD’s, and computer-generated materials. Our intention is to
provide these publications and services to as wide an audience as possible by ensuring that all we do is affordable to as wide an audience as possible in addition to distributing these materials and services free of charge whenever possible.
The company was founded in 1977 by two students at Bronx Community College of The City University of New York, Gary Johnston and C.D. Grant, who wanted to provide an outlet for writers and poets. This original idea
was soon expanded to include various artists and performers, including painters, photographers, film makers, dramatic presentations, and dance programs. Over the thirty-five years of our existence, we have produced a television program on BronxNet Cablevision for over ten years, The Writer’s Network, and have organized
multi-media programs including all the art forms mentioned.
Our Board of Directors and Advisory Council include educators, writers and poets, photographers, fine
artists, and performing artists, all of whom are dedicated to the arts and to exposing them to diverse audiences.
We embrace all cultures and are especially interested in bringing the highest quality of art to those communities
of people who might otherwise lack opportunities to experience artistic creativity at its most professional level.
